African Mahogany is a large tree with a straight trunk like a guard standing tall and proud and providing good shade.
The Government announced the first city-level Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (BSAP) for Hong Kong in 2016 as a climate change strategy, and published the Street Tree Selection Guide in 2018, to promote diversification of soft landscapes and optimise use of native species for enriching urban biodiversity. African Mahogany is not native to Hong Kong and its ecological value is low, but it has a high tolerance to drought, water logging, roadside pollution and wind, thus it has been promoted in the Street Tree Selection Guide.
Southorn Playground is a landmark of Wan Chai. Sir Thomas Southorn, Colonial Secretary from 1925 to 1936, proposed to build a playground for children in newly reclaimed areas, and opened it in 1934. During WWII, the downtown of Wan Chai including Southorn Playground was attacked by air raids with heavy civilian casualties. Rumour has it that the Japanese military executions took place in the Playground. The city recovered after the war and the Playground turned into a vibrant night market with hawkers and performers. Today, Southorn Playground is still a popular leisure place for Wan Chai residents.
